References to musical modes (pans) are found in sangam literary works such as the Eattuthokai, Pathuppattu and other sangam period texts, particularly in the Arruppatai works. In this context, this study examines how the Kurinji pan is connected with the successive evolutionary development of music, as well as its transformations and the changes that occurred in the ways it was performed across different social strata.
Furthermore, the objective of this study is to examine the origin, development, transformation, and social use of the kurinji pan by drawing upon, with relevant quotations, the information concerning music, pans, landscapes,and social contexts mentioned in the Tholkappiyam. Based on references to pans found in sangam literature, the primary aim of this research article is to bring to light the musical and social evolution of the kurinji pan.
