Abstract

Sangam Akam literature presents various characters such as Thalaivi, Thalaivan, Paangan, Paangi, Sevili, and Nattrai. Among them, Thozhi (the heroine’s companion) plays an important social role. She supports the heroine in love, family relationships, marriage, separation, and conflicts. She communicates the heroine’s feelings to the hero, advises him, and protects the heroine’s dignity and welfare. Thozhi also acts as a bridge between the hero and heroine, emphasizing social values, family honour, and the importance of marriage. Thus, she represents not only friendship but also the voice and social agency of women in Sangam society.
